ABOUT ME!

My name is Laura Finlay and I am a second-year Bachelor of Education student at Trent University. I will be a certified French teacher as of April, 2021.

I am originally from Ottawa, ON, but I absolutely love chasing new adventures and thus, found myself pursuing my career in Peterborough.

Growing up in Ottawa, I was given the privilege of attending French school throughout the entirety of my student career. In fact, I am proud to say that French is my first language. I recently completed my FSL Part 1 certification through Trent University in 2019 and I currently serve as a self-employed French tutor for children of various ages, grades and levels.

I also grew up in a Catholic household and thus, the choice between the Catholic school boards or public was made very easy. When I decided to become a teacher, I knew that I wanted to make a positive impact on my students. I wanted them to feel as though once they graduated, they would have gained not only deeper knowledge about subjects taught in school but also a sense of self, a variety of life skills, a broader perspective on what life has to offer them and more importantly a deeper and renewed belief in their faith. These are only some of the reasons that I decided that I wanted to go into the Catholic stream and make my way to teach in a Catholic school.

I have had the opportunity to work in many different settings that I believe have prepared me for teaching. As you will see throughout my portfolio and resume, I have had the chance to work with many ethnicities, age-groups, special needs and learning styles. I strive to offer a safe, comforting, welcoming, inclusive environment for my students to grow and reach their full potential.

I have known that I wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. Working with children is my biggest passion and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to spend my life accomplishing my dream. There was never an option of another career for me. It has been teaching, or nothing. My passion for teaching and learning as well as my commitment to my morals and values will allow me to create a welcoming, honest and inclusive environment that encourages and allows my students to feel comfortable, confident and engaged throughout their learning journey.

I consider myself to be a life-long learner and would love to receive any feedback or new ideas that you'd like to share with me. Feel free to send me a message through my "contact" page at the bottom.
