I am a hero because... je suis un héro/une héroïne parce que...

One of the main themes my associate teacher wanted to emphasize was resiliency with our students. A lot of them tended to want to give up, but it’s our job to show them that they can succeed if they keep going.

Pictured below is one of the activities I got to be a part of that I absolutely loved. We began the lesson by asking students to analyze superheroes and made a chart with characteristics that they believed best described their favourite heroes. Afterwards, we made a chart next to it and asked our students to do the same thing but about “normal” people and how they can be heroes.

A lot of our conversations about “normal” people related to the current pandemic we’re facing and how we’re all handling it. That’s exactly where we hoped to head with the discussion because our goal was for our students to recognize that they are heroes.

We wrote the sentence “I am a hero because...” and they had to come up with the end of the sentence. They also had to come up with 3 descriptive words to put in their ‘bubbles’ on their poster. They made a draft and once it was approved, we gave them their hero silhouette to start their proper copy.

While they worked, I took each student aside and took a picture of them. We adjusted our pictures and printed them to cut out and glue their heads on the heroes to represent each of them individually.

The students LOVED this activity and I couldn’t be happier with how they turned out. 🦸🏽‍♂️🦸🏾🦸🏼‍♀️
