The Dot/Un bon point pour Zoé has got to be one of my favourite books. This book is inspiring in so many ways and contains so many amazing opportunities for cross-curricular activities.
One of the ways we used this book was to introduce Dot Art! I began asking them the connection that could be made between this type of art and the book. We had a long class discussion about the various types of Dot Art that could be created. We watched a few videos and I showed them some really cool images online of Dot Art and how beautiful it could be.
Then, it was their turn. In order for students to feel as though they could express themselves appropriately through their art, they only had 2 restriction; to include circles and ONLY dots. My Associate Teacher had done a lot of work with other shapes and really wanted to see what cool things they could do with circles & it was DOT Art after all. Otherwise, they had their pick of what they wanted to do.
Before they started, everyone had a piece of paper and a pencil and they had to do a rough draft of what they wanted to create for their final product. I looked them over and made sure that there were no lines, only dots and that they were respecting our rules of including circles.
Once approved, they could then pick their size of paper, their medium and their tools.
For their medium; they could use markers, pencils, paint or even pastels.
For their tools; if they chose to use paint, I brought in Q-tips, which we cut in half so that they could use both ends and have different types of dots, they could use paint brushes, the bottom of their pencils and so on. Whatever they had that would allow them to make a DOT.
In terms of their paper; they were allowed to select the size they wanted from the 3 choices we provided, small, medium or large. If they were using paint, we had special paper for them to use so that it wouldn’t just seep through the page.
After everyone submitted their work, I made them sign their art, and I framed each one, like Zoe’s in the book. I then hunt their Art in the hallway to be admired by all.
