I included this activity because it was something really fun that the students loved to do. I didn’t come up with it myself but it is something I would love to incorporate into my own classroom one day.

Every Wednesday, we had a special guest come in and help the class read an Indigenous book. This book talked about the importance of water and why we need to appreciate it and use it wisely.

Part of the activity that I loved (but unfortunately forgot to capture on camera) was a briefcase with locks on them. Each lock could and would be answered by a certain code that was determined throughout the story. There were clues that the students needed to remember and take note of in order to them put them into play on one of the locks.

Once the locks opened, the briefcase contained a special message from an Indigenous elder who spoke to them about taking care of the environment and the impact we can have on our own futures.

The water colour painting came afterwards as a more hands-on element to the lesson. Each student was given a pre-cut drop of water (cut onto a white paper) and each table was given some water colours. The students were then given the rest of the period to paint what they had learned and what they loved about water. Each student was then able to put it up on the wall and we were able to refer back to their water droplets throughout various other units.
